Training

A/Prof Saxby graduated from Cambridge University Medical School, in the UK, where he gained first class honours. After moving to Australia in 2002 he completed his surgical training in New South Wales and became an ENT specialist in 2011. In 2012 he underwent further specialist training in advanced ear surgery at the prestigious Fisch Microsurgery Institute in Luzern, Switzerland and spent time at the Specialist Otology Hospital in Beziers, France before completing a Neurotology & Otology Fellowship in Vancouver, Canada at the BC Children’s Hospital and St Paul’s Hospital.

Endoscopic (minimally invasive) keyhole ear surgery

A/Prof Saxby was one of the first surgeons in Australia to incorporate the endoscopic approach to ear surgery in his practice. He is an active member of the International Working Group on Endoscopic Ear Surgery (IWGEES) promoting discussion and research into minimally invasive approaches to the ear. He co-founded the Sydney Endoscopic Ear Surgery Research Group (SEES) and co-directs their annual training courses, which receive international attendance. He has been an invited speaker and faculty at numerous International ear surgery courses and meetings including Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada and USA.

Cochlear Implantation

A/Prof Saxby is one of the surgeons at the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC), an RIDBC service, which is Australia’s largest and most comprehensive implantable hearing device programs. He is skilled at implantation of cochlear implants, bone anchored systems, middle ear implants and is involved with research into new devices and technologies in this field.

Children’s ENT

A/Prof Saxby also has a busy paediatric practice managing all aspects of general paediatric ENT, including tonsillectomy, sleep disordered breathing, nasal allergy and grommets for glue ear (otitis media with effusion).

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The recent introduction of Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty (Dilatation of the Eustachian Tube) to Australia, is another of A/Prof Saxby’s special research interests, having spent time in Germany training on how to perfect the technique. Although in its infancy, it is showing promising early results and can be discussed with suitable patients as a possible treatment for their Eustachian Tube dysfunction.

Indigenous Ear Disease

A/Prof Saxby is dedicated to improving the provision of ear healthcare to Indigenous Australians and is a member of the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health at the University of Sydney. He provides a regular Outreach ENT clinic to the remote communities of Brewarrina and Bourke, as well as setting up telemedicine clinics back in Sydney.

Academic interests

A/Prof Saxby is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Sydney University and has presented at 35 national and international meetings, published more than 20 peer reviewed journal articles, and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and the Australian Journal of Otolaryngology. He is actively involved with education of ENT trainees and medical students through his involvement with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and University of Sydney.

Family

A/Prof Saxby is a proud father of three and lives on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
